All the talk about Madiba’s birthday a couple of days ago (and the persistent lack of summer in London) got me thinking back to my recent trip to Cape Town. I have family in South Africa so I visit a lot, but coming from London and a very multicultural family, I still tend to find partying out there a little bit odd. Although apartheid ended over 20 years ago, socialising can still be very ‘each to their own’, so it can take me a while to get used to the “who’s the darkie” looks.

And then I discovered Cape Town’s Cold Turkey parties. The people come in all colours and kinds, the beats are bassy and loud, and the vibes are so good even Lauryn Hill has been spotted there. The perfect lazy Sunday afternoon, Savanna cider in one hand,  biltong in the other, which as you can tell by the picture is the surest path to my happiness.
